Grace – Some Observations

By Thomas Dohling

Someone mentioned the “law of grace.”  While I know of the “law of faith” [Romans 3:27] – whereby “a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law” – I don’t find “law of grace” in the Bible.  Grace reveals “the righteousness of God apart from the law…which is by faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all who believe” [Rom. 3:21,22].

Christ Jesus is the embodiment of God’s grace.  “The law was GIVEN by Moses, but grace and truth CAME BY Jesus Christ” [John 1:17].  When we receive the Lord Jesus Christ, from “His fullness” we receive an increasingly abundant measure of grace [John 1:16].    Grace is not a thing which God gives us.   Grace is Christ Jesus.  He is God’s gift to us.  Having the Son we have all that pertains to the Son.   are after the fullness of Christ.  “Of His fullness we have all received” – an unlimited measure of grace! [John 1:16].  Grace and truth are bound up in Christ Jesus.  We must see that before God, God’s Gift is Christ – not a lot of spiritual blessings that we must diligently seek after, one by one, until we accumulate them like a collection of virtues or special graces!  That is not to say there are not many spiritual blessings we can obtain from God, only that they are ALL found in Christ!  Having the Son we have all that pertains to the Son [Ephesians 1:3].    There is a depth and richness bound up in His Person.

Salvation is the narrow gate we enter in by way of Jesus Christ “I am the door.”
Coming into the fullness of Christ is the narrow path we walk on in Jesus Christ “I am the Way.”

“Come to me” Jesus said – the narrow gate.
“Learn from me” Jesus said – the narrow path.

Eternal Life is Christ Jesus Himself.  Eternal [everlasting] life is not somewhere in the future.  When we have the Son, we have eternal life NOW.  “…whoever believes in Him … have everlasting life” [see John 3:16].

We have everything in Christ already.  We don’t even belong to ourselves!  We belong to God!  Thank God!  He is in control of us!  His will be done!  [See Eph. 1:3-23.]   It is the Father’s will that we may have everlasting [eternal] life in the Son of His love [John 6:38,39].  It is His will that we be His children [Ephesians 1:5].  He accepted us in the Beloved [Eph. 1:6].  God would have us seek Him first and not His things [Matthew 6:33, Luke 13:31].   HE IS OUR ALL IN ALL.  Therefore, He is our portion; His inheritance is in the saints [Eph. 1:18].

Christ is God's gift to humanity.  If we have Him, we have ALL thngs.  "If God did not spare His own Son, but freely delivered Him over to death on our behalf, how will He not also, with Him, freely give us all things?" [Romans 8:32].  We are truly blessed!

May He be our deepest desire and greatest joy & satisfaction, to the glory of His Name.  Amen.
